Integrating Islamic Principles and Modern Counseling Approaches in Managing Family Crises: Evidence from Northwestern Nigeria

Abstract

This study examines family crisis management among Muslim families in Northwestern Nigeria, focusing on how Islamic principles and modern counseling approaches can be integrated into a unified and culturally grounded framework. The research aims to identify the predominant causes of family crises, explore relevant Islamic teachings, assess contemporary therapeutic strategies, and evaluate the effectiveness of a blended model that harmonizes spiritual, moral, and psychological dimensions. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the study employed purposive sampling to select participants, including Muslim couples, religious scholars, family counselors, and social workers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and documentary analysis. Thematic analysis was employed to interpret recurring patterns and contextual insights. The findings reveal that financial strain, communication breakdown, and misunderstanding of marital responsibilities constitute the major triggers of family crises, while Islamic concepts such as sabr (patience), shura (consultation), and rahmah (compassion) play a significant role in conflict de-escalation. Modern approaches, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy and structured family counseling, further strengthen communication and emotional regulation. The study contributes a culturally sensitive integrative model that bridges Islamic ethical guidance and contemporary psychotherapy, offering practical implications for family counselors, religious institutions, and policymakers seeking sustainable solutions for family stability in Muslim communities.
